Date of Travel: March 13–26

Cruise Line & Ship: AmaWaterways – AmaSerena

Type of Traveler: Solo

A Solo Adventure That Exceeded Expectations

In March, I set off solo on the Tulip Time cruise with AmaWaterways aboard the AmaSerena, and it ended up being one of the most memorable travel experiences I’ve ever had! I wasn’t quite sure what to expect as a solo traveler on a river cruise, but from the moment I stepped onboard, I felt completely at ease and well taken care of. The entire journey was smooth, relaxed, and beautifully curated from start to finish.

Service That Stood Out

The staff truly made this cruise special. Every team member—whether in housekeeping, dining, or guest services—was warm, friendly, and genuinely helpful. The cruise manager and hotel manager were constantly available in the lobby, happy to chat, answer questions, and offer tips for each port. That level of attentiveness made a huge difference, especially as a solo traveler!

Dining Done Right

The food onboard was absolutely delicious. The daily menus offered a great mix of local inspiration and reliable favorites. One of the highlights was the Chef’s Table dinner—a multi-course culinary experience with thoughtful wine pairings and beautifully plated dishes. It felt like a special event without being formal or stuffy.

Built-In Excursions (or Explore on Your Own!)

One of the best parts of cruising with AmaWaterways is that excursions are included—and they’re not one-size-fits-all. You can choose between guided tours, active outings, or simply walk off the ship and explore solo. I loved that flexibility! Every guide I encountered was engaging, knowledgeable, and truly passionate about the place they were sharing with us.

Itinerary Highlights 🌷

We started in Amsterdam, where I visited the Tulip Experience—a fun and colorful introduction to the tulip season (though the blooms weren’t quite at peak yet—early April is better!).

Next was Giethoorn, a fairytale town made up entirely of canals and footpaths. No cars, just peaceful waterways and thatched-roof houses—it doesn’t get more charming than that!

Other favorites included:

Zierikzee, Kampen, and Bruinisse – full of drawbridges, medieval architecture, and peaceful canals.

Bruges – where I wandered the streets, ate waffles, and saw Michelangelo’s Madonna and Child at the Church of Our Lady.

Antwerp – where I treated myself to a diamond ring (because why not when you are in the diamond capital of the world?). And had another waffle.

Delft – where I toured the Royal Delft Blue factory and brought home a stunning hand-painted peacock vase.

Kinderdijk – iconic Dutch windmills in a beautiful, tranquil setting.

Onboard Vibes: Relaxed, With a Touch of Fun

The atmosphere on board was laid-back and friendly. Most guests were couples in their 60s and up, with a few friend groups and solo travelers like me. Evenings were calm but never boring—there’s a lounge with a dance floor, and after dinner, live music and entertainment got people up and dancing! The fun typically wrapped up around 10 p.m., which honestly felt just right.

Who This Cruise Isn’t For

While I absolutely recommend this cruise for solo travelers, couples, and small groups who appreciate great service, food, and cultural immersion… it’s not for everyone. If you’re looking for high-energy nightlife, a party vibe, or activities for kids, this probably isn’t the best fit. Families with children or party-seekers will likely find the pace too slow and the offerings too quiet.

Final Thoughts

The Tulip Time cruise on the AmaSerena was the perfect balance of structure and freedom, with unforgettable stops, exceptional staff, and beautiful meals. Whether you’re traveling solo or with friends, it’s a relaxing, enriching way to explore the Netherlands and Belgium during a truly special time of year.
